Out of School Activities
After School Clubs, Breakfast Clubs and Holiday Playschemes
After School Club
We run seven after school clubs where the emphasis is having fun with responsibility. We encourage the children to make a contribution to the organisation and planning. They are involved in deciding what activities and equipment they would like for the club.
We have arts & crafts, board games, construction toys, team games and sports outside when the weather is good. We also have televisions and Playstations for occasional use.
There are areas where children can relax and read, but we are not a homework club. The emphasis is on letting the children unwind after lessons. Our staff are not teachers but are all CRB checked and experienced and committed playworkers, many with childcare qualifications.
We have been operating since 1997 in response to the government’s desire to give support to working parents. We are committed to supporting and working with the Extended Schools agenda.
We operate the following After School Clubs:
The Free Church After School Club, Welwyn Garden City – collecting children from Applecroft School and Panshanger School. This town centre club is run in conjunction with the Free Church at their premises opposite Sainsbury’s, where the upstairs has been converted in to a child friendly area for 40 children, and we have the use of a large garden.

Breakfast Clubs
We run three breakfast clubs. The emphasis is on a relaxed early morning environment where children can meet their friends and prepare themselves for the school day ahead. Games and activities are provided every day. We make sure children safely arrive at their classroom after the club.
We operate the following Breakfast Clubs:
Applecroft Breakfast Club, Welwyn Garden City – for children of Applecroft School, we operate in the school dining room and breakfast is available for the children. We care for up to 20 children per day and open from 7.45am until school starts.
Commonswood Breakfast Club, Welwyn Garden City – for children of Commonswood School, we operate in the school dining room and breakfast is provided for the children. We care for up to 16 children per day and open from 7.45am until school starts.
The Croft 8 o’clock Club, Hertford – for children of Wheatcroft School, we operate in a school classroom and care for up to 20 children per day and open from 8am until school starts.
Holiday Playschemes
During holidays and half terms, with more time available, we try to follow themes, for instance on theatre and music. We supplement the normal activities with outside experts.
The children have tried archery and learned about its history. A rain forest expert brought along toads and snakes. Recent outings include a visit to Chessington World of Adventure.
Holiday playschemes operate from 8am – 6pm, Monday to Friday with 40 places for 5-15 year olds at the Free Church.
Children bring a packed lunch and we provide a teatime snack and a tuck shop.
