Nursery
Pre-School Nurseries in Welwyn
This is for children aged 3 years to rising 5’s and has a staff ratio of 1:8
There are two rooms in pre-school each room has different play areas. One room is for more messy, noisy play such as painting, sticking and musical instruments and the other is for quieter play with a writing table, computers, math’s area and home corner.
The children are divided into two groups by age. The older ones being the ‘Butterflies’ and the younger ones being the ‘Caterpillars.’ Both groups get to spend half the day in one room and half in the other so that all the children get to experience all areas of play and learning.
In each group there are two key groups of children each with there own key worker. The staff to child ratio within pre-school is 1:8.
The keyworkers work hard with the pre-school team leader to plan and assess the children’s learning and to keep a record of the children’s development. There are opportunities for the parents to look through these records and discuss them with their child’s’ key worker.
Each child has a coat peg and a spare clothes bag. The children are encouraged to develop a certain level of independence; going to the toilet by themselves, hand washing, eating with a knife and fork and learning to put on their coats and shoes.
The children eat their meals in the dining room which is also one of the pre-school rooms. After lunch we have T.V time. This is a nice quiet, restful time for the children which refreshes them for the afternoon.
The key workers keep a weekly diary so parents can see what their children have been doing. Each week there is a section for parents to write their comments. Many parents write about things that have happened over the weekend.
The children have a weekly news book where they draw pictures of things they have done or seen over the weekend and the keyworkers write in captions from what the children have told them.
From around three years of age we provide pre-school education, particularly during the child’s final year before school. This is centred on the Early Learning Goals for Foundation Stage initiated by the Schools Curriculum and Assessment Authority (SCAA).
Six areas of learning are included:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – learning how to work, play and co-operate with others, including personal, social, moral and spiritual development.
- Communication, Language and Literacy – developing competence in talking and listening and providing a foundation for reading and writing.
- Mathematics – providing a foundation for numeracy and learning about different aspects of mathematical understanding.
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World – developing an understanding of the children’s environment, other people, the natural and made world.
- Physical Development – providing opportunities for children to develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills.
- Creative Development – developing imagination as ideas and feelings are expressed in creative ways.
