Nursery
Babies
The Baby Unit consists of a large carpeted play area, a messy eating area, bathroom and kitchen facilities and a separate sleeping / rest room.
A senior member of staff in charge of the unit is assisted by a team of nursery nurses and assistants to provide care for 30 babies aged from 3 months to 2 years with a ration of 1:3.
The children have plenty of time to play freely with suitable toys and equipment relevant to their age. The staff join in and encourage their play, providing stimulation, conversation and cuddles, ensuring the babies all round development. Activities provided throughout the day include sand / water play, story / singing time, art and craft, books, activity gyms, stacking and posting toys, basic construction, musical instruments and first attempts at cooking and lots more.
The area provides a quiet stimulating warm and welcoming start to help both baby and parent feel settled, welcomed and provides a homely environment where babies can experience different sounds, textures, colours and their first experience of paint and water.
The staff plan a variety of activities for the day that helps towards their development. They plan activities for encouraging the children to crawl and walk and singing time for them to attempt their first words. Sensory activities include the treasure baskets and heuristic play.
As the babies get older the staff provide a more structured routine, encouraging the children’s independence.
There is a large home corner and separate book corner where the children can help themselves to the toys and books.
There is plenty of time for free play and they are also involved in basic supervised activities with the staff, these include painting, sticking, cooking, story time, music, role play, dressing up and puzzles.
The staff encourage the children to feed themselves and to use a cup without a lid, getting them ready to move to toddlers.
Parents are presented with a daily diary so that they can see how their child is progressing and an update on their time at nursery that day. There is space for parent’s to comment / give feedback.
Access to planning is available and staff are happy to discuss the Birth to three matters framework which we follow in the nursery in both the Babies and Toddlers areas.
